Baja Clavius by Madeira Desouza Baja Clavius by Madeira Desouza Feb. 07, 2012 20846 words Read a sample
Author bio:
I was born in the United States into a Portuguese-American culture that was dominated by the Roman Catholic Church. In that culture there was no room for anything but macho and tough males, who were expected to produce babies. Of course, this was intended to happen after getting married, never before. The more tough you looked and acted, and the higher the number of offspring you generated, the more masculine you were perceived to be in that culture. This worship of testosterone runs hot and freely in many other ethnic groups in the US, but it is particularly evident in those of Mediterranean origin like mine. Growing up in that culture ensured my social programming was to think that I was straight. How I discovered the truth about being gay is worth pursuing in some detail at my website. I was formally educated in the art and craft of storytelling, photography, news reporting, etc. when I worked towards earning my undergraduate degree in journalism. In the professional context, I learned that telling a story is an essential ingredient if one wants to connect with an audience. I am an illustrator and storyteller who chooses to produce depictions in text and images that include themes of masculine men in peril. My depictions of masculine vulnerable men in peril have a high level of dramatic tension and energy. To me, depicting love expressed between one man and another man in images or stories is not sufficiently dramatic in the storytelling sense. In contrast, stories about breaking up or suffering the loss of a love contain far more dramatic energy for the audience. The man-meets-man-and-falls-in-love-and-then-they-live-happily-ever-after story is not for me as a steady diet. Such storytelling (in text or visual form) emphasizes the powerful but false belief that life turns out happily and positive for everyone.

I graduated with a master’s degree in English and Critical Theory from Pepperdine University, Malibu, where I also worked for several years as a Humanities Discussion Leader and a Writing Center Tutor. Then, while pursuing my writing, I worked at a video store that specialized in out-of-print, hard-to-find, art house, and adult films. I’ve even worked for the Catholic church, but that’s another novel. I like genre fiction, but even here I tend to interject social commentary and critique. I once quipped to a friend that the best novel for me would be a series of Platonic dialogs (relating to contemporary social issues), liberally interspersed with subversive pornography. Without loss of character and story. I’m still fumbling my way toward this literary ideal.

I’m an avid RPG gamer. My other favorite thing to do is work in my garden (when weather permits) and am an amateur chef. Feel free to contact me to discuss writing anytime!

Blaine is a purple haired, forty-something, writer of gay fiction with a love of men, music, mystery, magic, fairies (the pointy eared ones), platform shoes and the colours black, purple and red, who sings her way through life. Born and raised in Zutphen, the Netherlands, Blaine spent many hours of her sheltered youth reading, day dreaming, making up stories and acting them out with her barbies. Though she wrote her first gay fiction as a teenager, Blaine's true inspiration comes from the wonderful gay romance called 'Beautiful Thing' — adaptation of the play by Jonathan Harvey — through which she gained some very dear gay friends and a postponed bout of puberty that caused an introverted and shy Blaine to finally grow into herself. Supporting Blaine in all matters regarding household, teenagers, cairn terrier Kendra and pursuing her dreams, is her long-suffering husband for over twenty years. When not writing, reading or at choir practice, Blaine has singing lessons and hopes to be in a band someday.
