Riley’s Mistake

Chapter 1

Riley crossed and then uncrossed her legs. She sat up straight, before slumping back down in her seat. She couldn’t get comfortable and it was going to be a long bus ride. Her pussy was wet and throbbing. She’d left Ava sleeping in her bed after a long night of loving. They’d only been together for a month, and Riley was nervous about how fast they were moving. She’d never had a lover last that long, and certainly never left them sleeping in her bed, while she went to work. This was a first for Riley, and she wasn’t sure she liked it.

Sure, she and Ava were having fun. And Ava was the best lover she ever had, but all this closeness was making her nervous. She wondered what would happen next. She shook off these thoughts as she left the bus, and headed to work.

In the office, she quickly headed to her desk, and let out a sigh as she sat down. She couldn’t help but think about Ava’s naked body, her golden hue contrasting against the dark sheets, as Riley kissed her shoulder before leaving. Riley remembered the silky texture under her lips, and pressed her fingers to her lips wishing they were still kissing Ava. She loved the feel of her lips on her lover’s skin, the shivers in response, the arch of the strong back, the gentle hiss, as her lips nuzzled sensitive areas. She pictured Ava’s face as she brought her to orgasm, and had to stifle her own moan of response.

A little shocked at her lack of control, she looked to see if her co-workers had noticed. Thank god the office wasn’t full yet; no one had seemed to hear Riley. Getting up to place her coat on the rack, she shook herself loose of the sensual thoughts that kept sliding in out of nowhere. She needed to focus. She was still working with the client whose file had conveniently created the excuse for her and Ava’s fateful meeting the month before. She chuckled at some of the papers still stained from the floor of the bus.

Even now a month later, the thought of that day brought a full flush to Riley’s body and sent her pulse skittering. While she wondered at the speed of their relationship, she shuddered to think of never experiencing the sexual awakening that Ava brought to life in her. She’d never experienced such fulfillment and contentment with one person before, and that’s part of what made her nervous. She wasn’t sure if she was the type for commitment, not sure if she was the ‘u-haul’ type lesbian. She liked her independence, she liked women, and she loved sex.

“Riley?”

The sudden saying of her name brought Riley’s head around with a start. She jerked as she realized it was her secretary Kaylie. All thoughts of Ava were pushed to the back of her mind. Kaylie was a quiet woman, who didn’t really interact with many of the others in the office. She was beautiful in a mousy, librarian sort of way. The cute, shy girl brought out the fierceness in Riley, and she admitted to herself that she’d had a slight thing for the other women since the first time she’d seen her. She wondered if Kaylie slept with her glasses on, while she read about, well whatever it was Kaylie would read about.

“Yes, Kaylie? Is there something you needed?”

Riley winced internally as she heard the slight sensual edge, imbuing the question with innuendo she hadn’t intended. It was known in the office that Riley was a lesbian, and had in fact slept with a few of the temps in the other offices. But it was also known that she had standards, and wouldn’t sleep with her direct co-workers. She wouldn’t want rumors to start if anyone heard her and Kaylie’s conversation. She tried to moderate her tone, as she noticed the slight blush come to Kaylie’s face.

“What do you want?” she tried again, a little colder now, and struggled to not apologize as the sting in her tone wiped the blush from Kaylie, turning her face a pale imitation of the honey color it normally was. Shrugging off the guilt she felt, she waited for Kaylie’s answer.

“Um, Ava called. She wanted to let you know that she locked up when she left, and put the key back. She also wanted to know if you could call her about tonight.” She let out the whole thing in a rush, before turning quickly to leave. Her abrupt departure made Riley feel awful, but she didn’t want anyone to know she was crushing on her secretary. Her feelings for Ava brought her more confusion about the situation and she harrumphed a little in frustration before returning to her file. Riley wondered if she should tell Ava they needed to take a break to let her figure out what she wanted. She wasn’t even sure if she and Ava were considered exclusive but the idea of being with another woman smacked of cheating. The sudden thought of Ava being with someone else ate a funny little hole in her tummy, and gave her a slight case of indigestion. Promising to look at that reaction later, she got up to go apologize to Kaylie.

“Kaylie”

Kaylie’s hurt filled eyes, hidden behind those sexy little glasses met Riley’s reluctantly. Guilt ate at her as she struggled to correctly word her apology. She didn’t want to give Kaylie the impression that she was weak, but she wanted to right the wrong she had done the woman looking at her.

“I’m sorry for my tone. I’m not mad at you for anything; you do a wonderful job here. I had a…. rough morning, and got off to the wrong foot. Can we start over?” She asked hopefully.

“It’s not a big deal, I interrupted you. I understand. Plus, it’s Monday. Everyone should be excused for a little grumpiness on Monday’s.” The hurt had receded and was replaced by a little relief, and a spark of amusement. That little twinkle started Riley thinking about what else could make those eyes shine. Shocked at the turn her thoughts had taken she hurriedly went on.

“Well, I just wanted to say I’m sorry, and ‘good morning’. Now I’ll be getting back to work. Thank you for the message about Ava.”

Riley turned her back abruptly, and missed as the amusement faded and confusion filled Kaylie’s eyes. She needed to figure out how to quash this thing that made her have these thoughts about Kaylie. If Kaylie ever figured out why Riley was being weird around her, she’d freak out, then probably quit. Riley didn’t want to lose her. She was a genius when it came to filing and taking care of the things Riley never remembered. Riley couldn’t do her job without Kaylie there to do her own. She would figure out a way to keep these feelings to herself. She would…do something.

Chapter 2

Ava had awoken alone. She had felt the gentle brush of lips against her should and a mumbled goodbye. When she had turned over, and finally opened her eyes she realized that Riley had left to go to work. She had let Ava sleep in. In her bed! What did that mean? It was a big deal for Riley to even let her spend the night, so Riley leaving her alone in the apartment meant they had taken a step in their relationship that they hadn’t even acknowledged yet. At least not to each other. Hell Ava had to admit, that she hadn’t admitted it to herself yet. She loved being with Riley. She was wild, and sexually exciting. They spent time together outside of bed too, but it always ended back there. She felt that they were on the brink of something, and it made her nervous. She wanted more of Riley, but didn’t want to demand something that Riley couldn’t give her and risk what they had. She knew how independent Riley was, and didn’t want her to feel trapped by what they shared. But she couldn’t help but feel that she was missing out on something. She started to notice other couples when she and Riley were out. She’d watch the obvious love and affection that other couples shared, and long to share what she was starting to feel with Riley. But she’d sneak a look at Riley and see the slight derision, and fear on her lover’s face that she couldn’t hide, before blanking her expression to look back at Ava. And Ava would bite back what she felt, and distract Riley with something else, dragging her in the opposite direction. But she was starting to struggle in her role; she wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep what she felt to herself.

She had called Riley’s office before leaving the apartment, knowing Riley wouldn’t be in yet, and left a message for her. She wanted Riley to trust her, and not abuse this new privilege she’d been given. And she was curious if they were meeting up that night, because she knew tonight was a late night. She thought about surprising her with dinner at the office when she got off herself at 5, but didn’t want to overstep. She wasn’t sure how Riley would feel about her being at the office. With her thoughts on Riley and their confusing relationship, she headed to work herself.

Chapter 3

Riley once again was struggling to focus on work. She was trying to work on the Daniels file. But the numbers and data were just floating past her eyes without her understanding any of it. As her stomach rumbled she realized it was late, almost 4pm. She’d skipped lunch because she had the weird compulsion to ask Kaylie to go with her. The office was starting to quiet as people left for the day. She was staying until 6 tonight because she was supposed to lock up the office. She still had two hours, and she was starving. She thought about calling Ava and having her bring her food when she got done at 5. But she wasn’t sure if she wanted to see Ava tonight with all these mixed feelings she was having. She promised herself that she’d work for an hour, then let Kaylie go home, and lock up early. With that promise she got back to work.

Riley looked up an hour later and got up to stretch. She looked out of her office to see the other empty desks. She turned her head to tell Kaylie to head out, when the words died in her throat. Kaylie had removed her staid jacket she’d worn over her blouse and was stretching her sore back, much as Riley had just done. But the way she stretched caused her blouse to ride up, and Riley had an unimpeded view of tightly toned abs. Her normally sedate looking skirt had slipped down low, and a peak of lace could be seen. Kaylie’s blouse was opened at the top and she was running her hand beneath it. Riley watched as Kaylie rubbed her neck, stretching the kinks out. As she rolled her head, she let out a small moan. It was the moan that undid Riley. She was instantly soaking her panties, as the moan stroked her tense nerves from this morning’s situation.

She was crossing the floor before she realized her feet had moved. She was nearly to Kaylie before her footsteps registered. Kaylie’s head snapped up. She met Riley’s eyes. She opened her mouth to speak.

“I didn’t realize you were still here! I was just gonna get going. Did you…” Riley’s lips covered the words before they were finished. Her hands came up and held Kaylie’s face still as her lips continued their onslaught. She heard Kaylie murmur a protest, and slowly traced the lips beneath hers with a moist tongue. Riley felt when Kaylie surrendered, opening her mouth, and Riley slipped her tongue inside. She thrilled as Kaylie moaned into her mouth, making Riley’s nipples peak, and her pussy throb. Neither of them noticed when the elevator dinged. They didn’t hear the footsteps crossing the carpet, but they did hear the crash as the food and bottle of wine fell from Ava’s hands. They broke away from each other, and turned. Riley looked into Ava’s shocked and devastated eyes. She stepped back from Kaylie, and glanced at her face. Her lips were plumped from Riley’s kiss. She saw the horror and guilt in those eyes, and wanted to kick herself for giving in to her impulses. She knew Kaylie would blame herself for what happened.

Ava couldn’t believe her eyes. She knew that her and Riley hadn’t labeled themselves as exclusive but she still couldn’t believe that Riley would do this to her! Spinning away from the devastating scene in front of her, she ran for the door. She heard Riley calling her name, but she couldn’t stay to hear what she had to say.

‘God damn it!’ Thought Riley as she hurried after Ava. Muttering an apology to Kaylie who was quickly putting her coat on, and avoiding Riley’s gaze.

“Forget about me! Go after her!” she hear Kaylie say. So she had turned to follow Ava.

She was quick and almost to the elevator when Riley caught up to her. She grabbed for Ava’s arm, when she saw her turn, and raise her hand. She felt the sting on her cheek before she realized that Ava had slapped her. She let the pain filter through her before she attempted to speak.

“I deserved that”

“You deserve more than that! How could you? With someone in your office! Isn’t she your secretary? I thought you didn’t sleep with people in your office? Or is this the only one I’ve caught you with? How many others have you slept with while we’ve been together? How many?” Ava’s voice was shrill at the end of the last question, and Riley winced. She braced herself for another slap when she saw Ava’s arm move, before she saw her crumple to the floor. Tears pooled and fell as Ava kept asking questions.

“Why Riley? Am I not enough for you? Don’t you have any feelings for me at all?” Riley’s heart broke at the bleakness in Ava’s voice. She fell to her knees at Ava’s side, and tried to gather her in her arms. She saw Kaylie out of the corner of her eye. She ignored her for the moment. Ava struggled before letting herself be held. She cried into Riley’s chest. Riley started to explain herself.

“I didn’t mean to kiss her! I tried to stop myself. I did. I hate myself for giving into it. I’ve had a crush on her since before I knew you. But I told myself I couldn’t because she works for me. I don’t date anyone from my office. And then I met you, and you’re amazing. And I’m so confused about what we’re doing. Are we a couple? Are we exclusive? Are we friends with benefits? And I was thinking about taking a break from you, so I could figure out how I felt. Because I’m confused about my feelings for Kaylie. And I didn’t want to hurt you. I don’t know what came over me today. I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been thinking about her all day. And she was stretching and when she moaned I couldn’t help it. It made me wet, and I had to kiss her! But I’m so sorry you found out this way. I wanted to tell you about my feelings, but wasn’t sure if you’d understand. Do you understand? Do you hate me? Can you ever forgive me?”

Ava had stopped crying as she listened to Riley. Her eyes came up and she saw Kaylie. Kaylie had started crying as she heard the anguish in Riley’s voice. “I’m so sorry Ava! I didn’t mean to kiss her! I don’t know what happened!” Kaylie turned to Riley. “I’m so sorry; you’ll have my resignation tomorrow morning!” She turned to the door to leave.

“Wait!” both Kaylie and Riley turned to Ava. “Don’t leave, Kaylie. This isn’t your fault. And Riley it’s not your fault either. You can’t help who you’re attracted to. It’s unfortunate but it happens.” Ava finished this last part with a sigh. “I know we’re not exclusive Riley, so I don’t have a right to react this way. It’s just….I was starting to fall in love with you. So this hurts. But it’s ok if you don’t feel the same. I know you have a problem with commitment and I told myself that you’d change your mind in time. But I can see that’s not going to happen now. Kaylie is very beautiful; I can see why you have a crush on her. I’m just gonna go now. I’ll get my things from your apartment some other time”.

Riley couldn’t believe what Ava was saying. “Does this mean we’re breaking up?”

Ava looked at her sadly. “How can we break up if we weren’t even together?”

Kaylie made a soft noise. “You can’t break up because of me! I’m sorry! What can I do to make it up to you guys? I’ll do anything! Please!”

“Kaylie, please stop. It’s not up to you to make this right. I don’t think there is any making this right.” Ava told her. She turned to Riley again.

“When you figure out your feelings for Kaylie and me, let me know. Maybe I can give you a second chance. But don’t call me or try to find me until you’re sure how you feel about me. I won’t be anyone’s second choice. I want you to choose me. But I can’t force you. It’s up to you and you alone. So until then… goodbye”.
