Magnum Tales ~ Y is for Yes
By J.M. Hadley
I felt closed in. Surrounded. I know it sounds funny, because I’m a lawyer, but I’d never seen the inside of a courtroom before. I don’t practice that kind of law. I stood a distance back from the doorway, looking in, hoping that no one would look back at me. I didn’t want anyone to see how nervous I was. I knew everyone would be looking at me, and I wanted this. I’d wanted this for a while. It would be good for me and Brian to finally get this over with. It had been long enough. We’d been through enough together. We needed to get this out of the way so that we could move on with our lives.
It was my boss’s idea to file here. I would have been fine with some out of the way place, but he knew the judge and thought it would be better for everyone if we did it here. I only wish it wasn’t so intimidating. I mean, don’t get me wrong. It is beautiful. The heavy, oak, raised panel doors were thrown open. The entire room was made of wood. The darkly stained floors, the dark paneling and the ornate high bench—a cliché. It was almost like a Hollywood set—too perfect. I felt like I was somehow out of place, but also, as an attorney, I felt like I should have at least some comfort level with the inside of a courtroom. But my legal skills and experience completely failed me.
