Once upon a time there was a young couple who were madly in love with each other. They knew they wanted to have a child to share their love but sadly, they were unable to conceive. The young man, a farmer, was desperate to give his wife a child as she had become depressed and withdrawn when they realized they could not have a child. The farmer sought out a witch for help. This witch, who lived outside of town, deep in the forest, was terrifying and powerful. The farmer brought with him his fattest pig, a healthy calf and a bundle of his finest wheat, hoping it would be payment enough for what he wanted to ask.

“Keep your livestock,” the witch said, standing in her doorway, watching the meek farmer.

“What would you have of me then?” the farmer asked, his voice quivering with fear.

“I will have your first born child,” she said simply. The farmer stared at her, a lump forming in his stomach.

“But, my child? How can you ask for the one thing I’ve come to ask you for?” the farmer pleaded.
