Bikini's Are Dangerous Book 5 | by K'Anne Meinel Aug. 15, 2011 | 7295 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: K’Anne (and yes this is her name and not a contrived name) writes books she would like to READ. She writes stories (as in short) that fans have asked for and for the exercise of trying something she may not be comfortable in writing. It expands her horizons to write outside her comfort zone. She likes creating whole characters as well as ‘quickie’ stories where she never names the participants and the reader places themselves in the story. As her short story readers read and realize the depth of the longer stories and then get introduced to her books she hopes they come to love the characters she has developed. She has found writing to be a schizophrenic experience, these characters live inside of her mind and to exorcise them from her brain she put them down on paper (not literally). That way, they are preserved for all time. She is ALL of her characters and yet, NONE of them. The feedback she has gotten from her readers is amazing, the vested interest in the stories and books, she doesn’t think anyone can NOT love hearing how a story made them laugh, cry, and fall in love, how they felt a similarity in their own lives, how they relate. It really makes the reader a part of the story they are reading. She wrote her first complete ‘book’ in 2003 and finished it within a matter of 2 weeks, this was SHIPS. She played with it on and off for the next 8 years before publishing it here on Smashwords and now it is about to be published in paperback by a publisher. It is exciting, it is terrifying, letting your baby get out there for the public to criticize, love, and laugh over. A good, well written book is priceless and reading some of her books and stories is like coming back to a good friend over and over again. Even she, who has written them, sometimes picks them up after a period of time and reads them like a well-worn paperback, enjoying her familiar and not forgotten friends. She began to write ‘shorts’ in 2011 to exercise her mind. She had a lot of ‘starts’ and not a whole lot of finishes to books and realized that not every idea, every concept, needed a complete book. Many of these shorts were suggested by a word or phrase or even a fan. The story “Heel or Heal†was totally suggested by a fan and way outside her comfort zone of romances and relationships. The odd thing about it was that the names she used, unbeknownst to her were exactly the same as people in this fan’s life and the fan was thrilled and amazed to find this odd coincidence had occurred. K’Anne’s life is a series of odd coincidences, she doesn’t question it anymore. Many times she has had dreams that have come true; de ja vu is a common occurrence. On the cover of SHIPS the Smashwords version is a Yin Yang pendant she wore for years. She really does believe that for everything good there is an equal amount of bad in your life. Believe her; she has had her share of bad so it’s time for some good! Eventually it all comes out in her books, good and bad! She wrote for businesses for a lot of years, even having her work published in an international magazine. Her work encompassed producing and publishing catalogs for her own businesses and for a short time being a publicist for other companies. She has always had a ‘feel’ for a well written story or book. She enjoys Bertrice Small, Danielle Steel, and Johanna Lindsey for their romance books. Nora Roberts too writes good romance but even better the drama and style indicates a fine mind. She loves good old fashioned westerns in the form of Louis L’Amour or Terry Johnston with good old fashioned values and plenty of aw shucks ma’am type of mentality. She enjoys reading history and biography books because she firmly believes we can learn from these. Besides, they help her fertile imagination to write her own stories and books. She has always enjoyed romance books and realized in her 30’s that romance between two women can be just as fulfilling as between a man and a woman. Jean Auel, J.K. Rowling, James Herriot, Mary O’Hara, and LaVyrle Spencer are among some of her favorites, she collects all of their published works as she finds them and has a quite a collection of books and movies as she has been collecting them all her life. For years she has gone to bed at night dreaming a story or a book. The first ‘book’ she wrote (SHIPS) came to her so hard that she couldn’t sleep at night and the only way to get some sleep was to put it down on virtual paper and write it or exorcise it out of her head. This isn’t a bad thing but finishing it was the greatest sense of accomplishment she cannot even describe. These stories and dreams though help create characters and plots that become stories and books. She enjoys pets and thinks of them as active characters in her books, from dogs, cats, to horses and more unique animals, she knows a lot about animals. In some capacity she has been in the pet industry for 30 years or more, from showing and training to selling and exhibiting. Some people will notice the lack of creativity in the names as she has certain names picked out for several books, stories, and novels that are the same. It is her sense of humor running amok and she enjoys tongue in cheek humor and double entendre. Befriend her or ‘like’ her on Facebook or Twitter and keep up with her books, stories, and career. There is sure to be something to enjoy, tell your friends, heck, tell 100 of your closest friends! Lol. Feel free to email comments, suggestions, or advice. K’Anne was born and raised in Wisconsin and uses it and several cities around the state as a base for several of her books and novels as well as a few shorts. She has lived in in Southern California and Central California and been all over this country from one end to the other. She prefers to think of herself as a gypsy who hasn’t settled too long in one place. Her life (or lives) as a journey; she hasn’t found the end of her road yet! |

Mouse Trap | by Sophie Duncan June 03, 2011 | 10592 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I also write with my sister under Tasha-and-Sophie Duncan, and for some of my adult fiction as A D Benedict. By day I am a project manager developing IT solutions for a large company in the South East of England. By night, you'll find me scribbling away at many a story that just won't leave me alone. I've been writing since I was a wee thing, and publishing since I discovered the internet in 1994 or so. So what do I write? Contemporary and urban fantasy have mainly been my playground, but I have done some real world settings as well. I do like mystery and have been reading (and watching) Agatha Christie since I was a child. I've also been known to do a bit of poetry. Style: I have been told I do angst well, so if you want your heartstrings twanged, or your tummy to tie in knots until the end, then I'm your gal. I am, however, a happy ending junkie, although I do throw a hint of realism in there sometimes as well. I like a few twists and turns on the way in some of my plots, although I have written my share of PWPs as well. I have to admit a small obsession with eyes: I believe they are the seat of beauty in a person, so I play with them in creature fic and use them for expression in others - personal hang up, sorry. Also, I have never met a cliché I didn't like and I am a firm believer that cliché is fine if you do it right. Writing is a passion and there's nothing better than writing for an audience. Any writer who says they don't care about feedback must have had an ego amputation :) If you life my scribbles, I'd be very glad to hear from you. |
